FOREVER AN EAGLE: AN EAGLE REUNION

In the final regular-season dual meet for both programs ahead of the 2026 Mid-American Conference Championships, the University of Akron and Ohio University women’s swimming & diving teams squared off Friday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium. Akron asserted its depth early and never let up, continuing a strong regular-season finish by building a commanding lead over Ohio. Powered by wins across multiple strokes and strong relay performances, the Zips jumped out in front and held a 132–73 advantage on the team scoreboard through the first day of competition. Akron claimed victories in marquee events including the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay, while its sprint and distance groups consistently added points across the pool. Beyond the team standings, the meet carried an added storyline — a reunion of sorts — as two former Walnut Hills Eagles competed on opposite sides of the pool. Sofia Matern — Ohio University (Swimming) Now a sophomore for the Bobcats, Sofia Matern graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 2024 and was one of the program’s most decorated swimmers. Coached by Tammy Smith, Matern earned Female Athlete of the Year honors in 2024 and achieved varsity status all four years. She set the school record in the 200 IM in 2023 and was part of the school and pool record–holding 200 medley relay from 2021–2024. A team captain as a senior, Matern qualified for the OHSAA State Championships each year from 2021–2024, leaving a lasting legacy at Walnut Hills. Elizabeth “Bela” Noble — University of Akron (Diving) Senior diver Elizabeth “Bela” Noble continued to deliver key points for the Zips, finishing second in the 1-meter diving event in a competitive field. During her Akron career, Noble has earned 13 points at the MAC Championships, contributing to the Zips’ 2023–24 MAC Championship title. Her accolades include All-MAC Second Team honors, selection to the All-MAC Academic Team, and CSCAA Scholar All-American recognition. At Walnut Hills, Noble was equally dominant, capturing an OHSAA Division I State Championship, earning two ECC conference titles, and becoming a two-time All-American and two-time state qualifier. She currently holds the school records in both the 6-dive and 11-dive events. As the regular season concludes and teams begin tapering for the 2026 MAC Championships (Feb. 25–28 at the University of Akron), both programs head into postseason competition with momentum. The sight of former Eagles competing at the highest collegiate level — now leaders for their respective programs — added a meaningful and emotional layer to an already high-stakes MAC dual. We can’t wait to see what Sofia and Bela accomplish when they take the stage again at the MAC Championships later this month. Akron v OU Meet Results
